Location - Farmington is a community with a population of 46,000 situated in the valley of the Animas and San Juan Rivers in northwestern New Mexico, part of the Four Corners region. Farmington is the regional population, commercial and industrial market center for the Four Corners area. The next largest city in the Four Corners area is Durango, CO (apx. 50 miles north at 6,300 ft. elevation) with a population of 16,000. Goods and services are locally available beyond what would normally exist in a city with this population size (e.g. two Wal-Mart stores, Sam's Club, Target, K-mart, Sears, J.C. Penny, both a Home Depot and Lowe's home improvement centers, etc.) due to the much greater population of the surrounding region, which uses Farmington as a supply center. Farmington's economic bases are tourism, agriculture, and extraction industries (oil, gas and coal). Farmington is located at an elevation of 5,300 feet in the high desert (horticultural climate zone 5) of the Colorado Plateau. Summer temperatures reach into the 90's with very low humidity. Temperatures greater than 100 F. are uncommon. Winter temperatures commonly reach an overnight low in the 20's or teens with occasional single-digit temperatures. Average rainfall is aproximately 9 inches. Precipitation mainly occurs during the summer moonsoon season (July and August) with occasional light snow during winter months. Unlike low Sonoran Desert cities such as Phoenix and Tuscon the high desert climate of San Juan County, NM is more suited to year-round living and activities. In addition to a milder summer climate Farmington also has the benefit of being at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains with ski areas such as Durango, Co, Silverton, CO, Telluride, CO and Wolf Creek Pass, CO accessible in as little as 1.4 hours driving time for winter recreation. Many world class archeological sites such as Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, Chaco Caynon, Aztec Ruins, Canyons of the Ancients, Mountain Ute Tribal Park and Canyon De Chelly are within a few hours drive as are other noted Four Corners attractions such as Monument Valley, Natural Bridges, Canyonlands, Glen Canyon and Navajo Lake. Other unique Four Corners attractions include the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gage RR, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR and public hot springs at Durango, Pagosa Springs, Ouray and Ridgway, CO. Within a half-day drive from Farmington world class leisure destinations such as Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, NM may be reached for visiting. Commercial air service is available via the Four Corners Regional Airport located within the Farmington city limits. It may be noted that the immanent availability of autonomous personal aircraft will make access to Farmington from major transportation hubs, such as Albuquerque, NM, Denver, CO, or Salt Lake City, UT far more accessible than has historically been the case.
